Legislatorii propun impozit pe păcat pentru toate jocurile de noroc din Brazilia

By - 8 iulie 2024

The working group on the regulation of tax reform in the Chamber of Deputies has made changes to the selective tax, including two new categories of products and services. According to the opinion of the deputies, electric cars and sports betting, fantasy games and lotteries will also be subject to the tax charged on items that harm health or the environment. The new taxes could also be imposed on other types of gambling if Congress passes PL 2234/23. Members of the working group want any type of gambling, be it face-to-face or online, be taxed with the higher tax rate.

“It’s harmful to health, that’s the understanding of the working group,” said Deputy Moses Rodrigues, a member of the working group. According to the lawmaker, the topic will be the subject of discussion among deputies on the subject in the plenary of the Chamber.

In a press conference, Deputy Hildo Rocha explained that the tax has no collection objective. “It is done to tax those products that are harmful to health and the environment. We understand that gambling, as the name implies, is harmful to health,” he said.

The working group analyzing the main text of tax reform regulation in the Chamber of Deputies released its preliminary report on Thursday, the 4th. However, changes can still occur before the plenary vote scheduled for this week.

In June Deputy deputatul Joaquim Passarinho one of the members of the working group analyzing the main text of the regulation of tax reform said that he wanted online gambling among the activities on which a impozit nou could be levied. The lawmaker told press that he had requested a study from the Federal Revenue Service on gambling available on mobile phones and online in order to access the numbers generated by the activity.
